Baton of Hope comes to Norwich

Baton of Hope

The Baton of Hope, will arrive in Norwich this September as part of the UK’s largest ever suicide prevention initiative, aimed at breaking the silence and stigma surrounding suicide.

Created as a powerful symbol of mental wellbeing and mirroring the Olympic torch, the Baton’s nationwide tour takes in 20 cities across the UK this year, celebrates mental wellbeing rather than physical prowess.

A highlight of the Norwich visit will be a powerful conference titled “Conversations Around Suicide”, hosted at Norwich Cathedral. Organised by local charity Hope After Suicide Loss, the event will feature a range of speakers many with lived experience who will share their personal journeys and insights to promote understanding and support.

“We are honoured to carry the Baton in memory of our own loved ones and on behalf of the many families we support through our work,” said Lucy who is also a Trustee for Hope After Suicide Loss. “This event is a vital opportunity to shine a light on suicide prevention and encourage open, compassionate conversations.”

Suicide remains the leading cause of death among men under 50 and women under 35 in the UK. Alarmingly, there has been no significant improvement in national suicide statistics for 17 years.

Both Lucy and Christian are passionate advocates for mental health awareness and believe that bringing the Baton of Hope to Norwich will amplify the conversation and provide a crucial platform for change.

“Too often, stigma prevents people from reaching out,” Christian said. “The Baton is about hope, connection, and a call to action for us all.  Together, we can help save lives and offer hope to those who feel alone.”

The event in Norwich is part of a wider effort to engage communities, support those in crisis, and provide meaningful help for those affected by suicide.
