Sarah’s Blog – Bereavement and Holidays
As I write, the schools have just broken up for the summer holidays. Many families will be heading to the coast or countryside for a staycation or to the airport for travels further afield. Even though so far, the weather has been on the cool and rainy side, ‘a change is as good as a rest’ so they say.
Many of those who are bereaved, especially of a partner, find holiday season is a difficult and lonely time. Holidays are usually enjoyed with our nearest and dearest, so when that special person is no longer here, it can seem that these opportunities have come to an end.
Happy memories of past holidays may also now be painful to remember. Thinking about planning a holiday may also bring feelings of guilt as that special person will not be able to share the experience.
Many of those bereaved of a partner find different ways of taking a holiday. Organised coach trips either for a day or longer can be a good way of getting a change of scene. There are many local companies who will organise all the details for you. Often there are other solo travellers present who are happy to share some company. We have often heard from many past participants of our bereavement groups, that people are always friendly on these trips and you do not stay on your own for long!
If coach trips don’t appeal, perhaps think about visiting friends who live in different parts of the UK or abroad. Even a few days away from our normal surroundings can be restful and refreshing. Other people decide to go away with family members who have young children. New parents are always grateful for the offer a couple of nights babysitting so they can enjoy an evening out in peace!
Beverley (who also facilitates Rosedale’s Bereavement Support Groups) and I always love to hear about bereavement group participants who have joined forces and been on holiday together. Though coming from different walks of life, there is common ground between them as they all know the difficulties that bereavement brings. Previous destinations have included, river cruises, WW2 battlefields of Europe and even Australia!
Our next bereavement groups begin in September. If you would like to join us, please call any branch of Rosedale to reserve your place. Courses are free and open to everyone no matter which funeral director was used.
